The Cedars, Jefferson County

The Cedars Antebellum House Jefferson County GA Photograph Copyright Brian Brown Vanishing South Georgia USA 2015

This grand antebellum home, located between Wadley and Sandersville,  is surrounded by ancient cedar trees, many of which are showing their age and the scars of wind and weather. I believe there were originally 13 trees, for the 13 colonies.  Sherman’s forces passed by the house en route to Savannah. It was owned by Judge A. E. Tarver, who had a large grist mill and farming operation here. Below is an illustration from the 7 January 1865 Harpers Weekly. Thanks to Buddy Moore for making me aware of this house and its history.
